Walk-in cooler warning signs every kitchen should know

A walk-in cooler that is running warm, icing up, cycling constantly or leaking water is telling you something. Catching it early protects the food inside and avoids an emergency shutdown.

Common warning signs

  • The box temperature drifts up, especially after deliveries.
  • Ice builds on the evaporator coil or around the door.
  • The compressor runs almost constantly.
  • Water pools near the evaporator or on the floor.
  • Door gaskets are cracked, torn or no longer seal.
  • Unusual noise from the condensing unit or evaporator fans.

Habits that help

Keep the door closed, keep product away from the evaporator, wipe up spills, and log the temperature at the same times every day. A log makes a slow drift easy to spot.

Plan for service, not for emergencies

Scheduled maintenance, including coil cleaning, gasket and door checks and refrigerant and electrical inspection, is the best protection against a failure on a busy weekend.
